Deconstructing Images
Deconstructing Images

From this mise en scene the audience can see a girl standing almost in the center of the shot, wearing a long blue dress with dirt at the hem. She is tilting her body slightly, holding a careful pose.
A white rabbit stands further in the foreground wearing a suit jacket and pointing to a pocket watch.
Another character in this shot is situated in the background, sitting at a large dinner table, wearing an orange and black top hat.
There are pink and red roses in the foreground, each with a face in the center of the flower.
Other vegetation in this shot is equally abnormal. A tree branch, and a vine, are making a spiral shape, for instance. Giant toadstools can also be seen.
The colour palette is widely varied; ranging from dark brown to light pink. The key details (title and company) are written in white, and with a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters. The range of colours and scenery in the shot makes the shot look very busy, so, from this, the audience can assume that the film is very busy and there is much more to look at.
The title, being written in white, contrasts to the background making it very clear. The mixed lettering suggests a quirky side to the film, which is supported by many other aspects of the mise en scene.
The proxemics of the characters suggest that the girl is the main character. Her stance creates an image that she is treading carefully. Her clothing is stereo-typically girly but the dirt on the hem indicates she has not been where she was planning to go.
The positions of the other characters suggest they of a less importance. The fact the rabbit is wearing a suit jacket captures an abnormal sense about the film, and his non verbal code connotes his concern with the time. The colours of the background character's top hat suggests a similar abnormality. His top hat may link with the fact he is sitting at a dinner table, and so possibly at an event?
The vegetation in the mise en scene have very abnormal qualities. The faces in the roses and the fact that the branches grow in spirals suggest that the film is very quirky and gives the audience an idea of the scenery seen in the film.
All of this allows the audience to see how extremely weird and quirky the film is, much like most of Tim Burton's work. The audience may feel intrigued into knowing what is going on in the film and what this 'world' is like.
