Deconstructions

The first two magazines were published in the 70's, which can be seen from the retro house style of both of them. As I am trying to incorporate the disco era, while modernising it, I thought I could deconstruct a dance magazine too, hence why the last three pages are a front cover, contents page and a double page spread of MixMag: a well-known dance magazine.
These all show conventions of disco and other electro sub-genres.

These deconstructions have given me ideas on what to include on my front cover and the house styles that i could use.

Go to these links! - Online moodboard

A tumblr blog of pictures, videos and music of the two genres I've narrowed my choice down to.

  • I put these mood boards together to show my favourite parts about the genres: disco and indie folk.
  • These images, videos and songs enable me to recognize the codes and conventions of the genre.
  • From this I can use ideas, such as the fashion and setting, to help me take the photos I need for this magazine.

Genre Research

Genre Research from AnnieHellier1

This research will help me recognize the codes and conventions that should appear on my magazine. I should now know to use aspects of the fashion, or style (i.e. dance moves), etc. in my magazine.

Music Magazine and Genre Homework

There are a wide variety of music magazines on the market, all with a different purpose and aiming towards a different target audience. The contents range from interviews with musicians, to promotions and information, and even some prizes.

Examples I could find are:

·         Alternative Press
·         Amazing Sounds
·         Appalachian Jamwich
·         Babble and Beat
·         Banter Zine
·         Billboard
·         Blender
·         By Volume
·         Chart Attack
·         Glide
·         Guestlist Network
·         Innerviews
·         Mojo
·         Music Arts Monthly
·         Music Box
·         The Music Magazine
·         Musos Magazine
·         New Musical Express (NME)
·         Paste Magazine
·         Psytrance
·         Q Magazine
·         Rock Rap Confidential
·         Rolling stone
·         Soul Shine
·         Sounds and Colours
·         Spin
·         Uncut
·         The Wire

Genre is a category of media text based on a common theme.

This is a 'wordle' of genres and sub-genres of music.

This research allowed me to see that there are no magazines out there currently on the genre of disco. This is what gave me an idea to do something new, yet old, and hopefully create a further interest in disco.

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

Front cover and contents evaluation from AnnieHellier1

I am very pleased with my preliminary task, and how it turned out. I managed to get an ideal photo for the kind of school magazine I was creating (overall achievement magazine). The other photos I used for the contents page were good too, as they were all very different but fit the style of the magazine. I'm happy with the presentation of the magazine, especially the front cover, seeing as I had never used photoshop before.
From this task I have learnt the basic skills on photoshop, and the gist of how to create a magazine front cover and contents. I look forward to improving my skills further on in the course.
